"The Minority Report"

Since I have finally found time to do some reading for fun, I read the short story "The Minority Report" by Philip K. Dick. It is the story which the upcoming movie "Minority Report", staring Tom Cruise is based off of. The story is fairly short, but I found it to be very entertaining. The style in which it is written is reminiscent of the science fiction writings of Ray Bradbury and Issac Asimov. I am very interested to see how the movie adapts this rocking short story.

"OSU Springfest 2002"

Springfest, the music festival held by "The Underground" , was held on the OSU campus yesterday. Several bands, some local, played at the fest. The event was caluminated by a performance by the hip-hop group "Cannibal Ox". I enjoyed the bands that played. It was a nice relief to hear something other than what is forcefed to you by the commercial airwaves. Check out some pictures from Springfest here.

MOVIES

"Insomnia"

After seeing "Insomnia" I would rate it 10/10 on my rating scale. I am a big fan of Christopher Nolan's work ("Momento", "Following") and am beginning to have the impression that his name is synonymous with great movies. This particular film has a great cast: Al Pacino playing a familiar role as a cop, Robin Williams comprising a sinister antagonist, and Hilary Swank (oh yeah, Julie-San) playing a seeminly naive young cop. This movie was not penned by Nolan himself, but is rather a remake of an earlier film by the same name. I would say that the movie is both intense and riveting and differently one that you should see.

"Belle & Sebastian 'Storytelling'"

The newest "Belle & Sebastian" album, "Storytelling" was released today. The album is a soundtrack to the Todd Solondz movie by the same name that came out earlier this year. Like other "Belle & Sebastian" albums this one is of the same high quality. Much of the cd is pure instrumental pieces, but these are still good. If you like "Belle & Sebastian" then you should definately listen to this new album.

COMICS

"Lone Wolf 2100"

I am a big fan of the manga, "Lone Wolf and Cub", done by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima. This series is being republished by Darkhorse Comics. A new comic mini-series called "Lone Wolf 2100" has also recently come out from Darkhorse Comics. It is loosely based on "Lone Wolf and Cub", but instead of dealing with feudal Japan as its predecesor does, it takes on a more sci-fi, futuristic approach. From what I have seen in issue one, the comic seems to be an interesting concept. The artwork is well done and the story seems intriguing thus far. While this comic most likely will not rival the original "Lone Wolf and Cub" it is perhaps worth reading at some point.

"Box Car Racer"

I just thought I would mention briefly the new album by the band "Box Car Racer". This album is a side project of the Tom Delonge, the guitarist of "Blink-182". Because of this influence the album has a very Blink-182esque sound to it. The album is perhaps slightly darker then than regular Blink-182 material and lacks the band's levity. This aside it is a decent pop punk album to listen to. However, I feel that there are myriads of other albums to check out and purchase before you seek this one unless you are a big Blink-182 fan.

ART

"Shepard Fairey"

I have been interested in silk screening for awhile and found out about this artist named Shepard Fairey who works with this medium. He does some interesting postering stuff (i.e. "Obey Giant" campaign) that I thought was pretty cool. Anyways there was an exhibit of some of his stuff at the Blue Cube art gallery in town so I went to check it out last week. Beside some of Fairey's art there was some pieces by similar artists. The exhibit was really neat in all. I also went to the gallery on the day they were having a mini film festival. They showed some art pieces by some local indy filmmakers and also a documentary on Shepard Fairey, which was really rocking. Check out Shepard Fairey's work if you are not familiar with it.

"Enon"

This past Sunday (5.26) I went to this local venue, Bernie's Distillery, and saw the band "Enon" play. Two other bands, "The Natural History" and "The Bloodthirsty Lover's", played first. I really like Bernie's as a venue and the show was really intimate and enjoyable. Enon played a short but good set as the crowd rocked out. I would recommend checking out alll 3 of the bands and especially "Enon". You can check out some pictures from the show here.

BOOKS

"Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Autobiography"

I recently finished reading "Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Autobiography". I have been into a kid-lit groove lately, and have been reading the "A Series of Unfortunate Events" series of which this particular book is a companion to. One probably would not enjoy nor understand this book if you have not read the previous eight books in the series. Having done this, I found this book to be a fun read. It deals with secret codes, spies, espinoge, and secret organizations; subjects that I suppose may only appeal to certain audiences. The book itself is physically cool, with a reversible dust jacket, which you have to check out to appreciate. This is an interesting read that will tide fans of the series over until the release of the ninth book in the series. If you have not read any of these books and have some time I recommend checking them out.

"Weezer 'Maladroit'"

This album came out less than a week ago and having listened to it before it was officially released I finally found time to check out the album itself. It comes on the heels of Weezer's 'Green Album' which was released approximately a year ago. As critics and fans are noting it has a divergent sound from this previous album. The good thing to note is that it is still Weezer. I often obserb that after realeasing so many albums, a band tends to change its style, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worst. With this album, the sound is still distinctly Weezer even with the band trying slightly different things and arrangements. I like this album a lot, and I see no reason that anyone who like Weezer's previous album would not like this one. Some of my favorite tracks on this album are 'Dope Nose'. Also worth checking out on the album is seven video clips of the band. One clip involves the Cobo Challenge...

"About a Boy"

I saw the new movie "About a Boy" yesterday. It is based on the Nick Hornby book by the same title. I enjoyed it, but found lacking in some parts. I thought it was a very good adaptation of a book to a movie. It is perhaps than the other Nick Hornby movie, "High Fidelity". The strength of this movie lies in the character of Will played by Hugh Grant. Grant provides an excellent adaptation of Hornby's character. His lines, his mannerisms, and his foppish appearance are great. This movie has some great humor elements in it. While it is missing some of the pieces that make the book great it is still a highly entertaining movie. So make sure you read the book and if you are looking for an enjoyable flick see the movie.

"Magic: The Gatheing - 'Judgement'"

Yesterday, I went with some people to a DCI sanctioned prerelease tournament for the new Magic: The Gathering expansion set, Judgement. I had not played magic for awhile nor had I played in a large tournament before. I realized how I had gotten screwed again with my housing assignment because it seemed that everyone in the dormitory where the people I went with lived enjoyed a lively game of magic. We got up early and went to downtown Columbus to the tournament. I entered in a 5 round sealed deck tournament. Each participant was given a starter deck of Odyssey and three boosters of the upcoming set judgement. We were then given time to construct the deck...

"Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones"

I went to see Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones last night. It was such a fanstasic experience. I arrived at the theater at 9:30 pm for the 12:01 am showing thinking I would be early. I was proven slighly wrong as a line had already snaked its way out the back. I took my place in line and started waiting. Over time the line grew until it was at least a quarter mile in length, streching from the theater all the way to the Target at the opposite end of the shopping center. In the parking lot people were having lightsaber battles. At 11:00 pm the doors open and the line began to filter in the theater. Theater employees kept scurrying around yelling, "Display tickets at all times". I took a seat in theater 24 (Star Wars was showing in 12 out of 24 theaters that night and they were all sold out) and sat down to wait. When it was 12:01 the movie had still not started and fans started chanting "Star Wars! Star Wars!" and waving their lightsabers menacingly at the projection booth. All of a sudden the lights went down, which produced a fantastic cheer from the audience and the previews began. Some of the previews we were treated to were of the new James Bond and new Matrix movies. The suspense was obviously building in the theater and when the green Lucasfilms logo finally appeared the crowd errupted again into applause and shouts. Then the screen changed. "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...".

"Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones"

I saw Episode II tonight. I am not going to post anything really relating to this movie until tomorrow. I just wanted to write down some personal thoughts. The movie was really good. It meant a lot. I will post more soon.

"Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones"

I have been hearing rumors that "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones" is now downloadable on the net. I have not check this out yet. I am going to wait until Wednesday to see the film, because I think it is going to be a movie that is worth seeing on the big screen. Also the film is only being released at theaters with state of the art sound systems anyways so this is another good reason to see it in the theater. I am hoping the film will be worth all the hype and speculation.

"Star Wars: Episode I -The Phantom Menance"

In preparation for the next part of the Star Wars series, Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones I watched the dvd for Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menance last night. I think this particular movie is highly entertaining, but at times the characters seem weak and very cliche. The special effects and actions sequence are quite able to make up for these shortcomings though. The dvd has some interesting special features that show some deleted scenes and commentary by George Lucas. Hopefully Episode II will eclipse its predecessor and leave us with something stellar.

The word is according to a recent Salon.com article article that the release of the fifth book in the Harry Potter series will be delayed. "Pedro the Lion 'Control'"

Recently I listened to the newest "Pedro the Lion" album "Control". Previous to this album I had not really listened to them much. I remember a couple of years ago seeing this emo rock kid at a show with his hands shoved into his front pockets supporting a burgandy t-shirt with a cartoon lion on it with the words "Pedro the Lion" under it. This sparked my interest at the time and I checked out a few of their songs. Later on I started getting into this little one man acoustic act called "Dashboard Confessional". I have since been checking out acoustic emo/indie rock bands and when "Control" came out I thought I would give 'Pedro the Lion" a second listen. "Pedro the Lion" is basically a one man band (David Bazan) and his songwriting for "Control" reflects his strength at this endeavor. His lyrics, while simple at times, weave dark and cynical songs that leave you rereading the liner notes. Here our some of the lyrics from "Control" that I like: "Cause if it isn't making dollars/ Then it isn't making sense/If you aren't moving units/Then you're not worth the expense" (from the song "Penetration") and "all of the experts say you aught to start them young/that way they'll naturally love the taste of corporate cum" (from the song "Indian Summer"). In the songs on this album he discuss love, marriage, and life, but from a pessimistic perspective. I really like this album and recommend it highly. "Pedro the Lion" achieves interesting things and you should definately check it out.
